Bill, I am a Water Safety Instructor Trainer. In the pro talk around swimming pools that are available to help students learn to be comfortable in the water and to help others to teach them, I'm called a “WSIT.” That ticket got me three credits of the four mandatory PE credits at UNC.
I had no idea that the folks at the Rec Center were doing that add-on to the qualifications test, especially for beginners! I think I helped out over there one summer doing lifeguard spots but don't think I ever taught there. I might have. Do you remember who your instructors were?
Terry Heisler for sure. Maybe Donnie Peters and Johnny Stephens. Terry and Johnny both lived on my street. Terry died a year or two ago. They’d all be mid 70s I guess.
I'm with you! I took beginners lessons at the rec center but signed up for intermediate classes at Kelly Springs. I nearly froze to death!
